Protect your car from theft.

Having your car stolen is an inconvenience you can do without. Not only is there the hassle of being without transport but losing any gear that may be in your car is also a nuisance.

A car with valuables on display is especially tempting. A wallet, handbag, mobile phone, cash, golf clubs, fishing gear, laptop, or a nice pair of shoes are all a bonus on top of a free ride home.

Key fobs left inside, a car that’s unlocked with the keys still in the ignition, makes it easy to steal.

Tips for making your car unattractive to thieves.

A top tip is to make the thief feel nervous about the time it’ll take to steal your car. The longer it takes to break into a car, the greater the chance of them being caught.

Here are some other preventative measures to discourage theft:

  • Always lock your car.
  • Don’t leave windows or the sunroof open when you're not in the car.
  • Hide your valuables. Lock them in the boot, out of sight. Better still, take them with you or leave them at home.
  • Park your car in a well-lit area when you’re away from home.
  • When you’re home, park in the garage, behind a locked gate or under a streetlight.
  • Don’t get out of your car and leave the engine running or keys in it, even for a few seconds.

Consider using some of these anti-theft tools:

  • Steering wheel lock
  • Wheel lock
  • Car tracking system
  • Car alarm system
  • Ignition cut out switch or ignition shield
  • Fuel cut out switch
  • Handbrake lock
  • Transmission lock

Some of these are standard with newer model cars, but they can also be retrofitted.

By keeping these things in mind, you can reduce the likelihood of your car being stolen.
