What happens to a deceased person's accounts when I notify the bank?
When we are made aware of a customer's passing Westpac will block access to any private and sole trader accounts owned by that customer (but not joint accounts). All signatories and enduring power of attorneys loaded on the private accounts will also cease.
Joint accounts will remain as they are with no blocks to your access. Ltd company accounts, partnership accounts, society accounts and trust accounts will also be left unblocked.
We will also block access to the deceased person's phone and internet banking logins and to any EFTPOS or other cards issued to them. Joint accounts and joint credit cards will still be accessible via the joint owner's phone, internet or card access as per normal.
